Sheena Powels is a Senior Staff Attorney at Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project. Sheena has worked at Esperanza for over five and a half years primarily representing children. Her passion for working with children has been lifelong. She has spent time volunteering with abused, neglected, and abandoned children living in group homes, and held an internship representing children in dependency court proceedings in the past. In her time at Esperanza, she has represented over 100 children eligible for immigration relief through Trafficking Victims Protection and Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) Asylum, a visa for victims of Trafficking, a U visa for victims of crimes in the United States who cooperated with Law Enforcement Agencies, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status for children who have been abused, neglected, and/or abandoned by one or both of their parents. When representing her clients Sheena has a passion for helping the whole person and treating her clients and their families through a trauma-informed lens. Her favorite quote is “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men” by Frederick Douglass, her goal is to keep that in mind in all that she does.
